1Salmo: Cantai ao SENHOR uma canção nova, porque ele fez maravilhas; sua mão direita e seu santo braço lhe fez ter a salvação.

2O SENHOR fez ser conhecida sua salvação; perante os olhos das nações ele mostrou sua justiça.

3Ele se lembrou de sua bondade e de sua fidelidade para com a casa de Israel; todos os confins da terra viram a salvação de nosso Deus.

4Gritai de alegria ao SENHOR, toda a terra; clamai, cantai alegres, e tocai salmos.

5Tocai ao SENHOR com harpa; com harpa, e com a voz da música;

6Com trombetas, e som de cornetas, clamai alegremente diante do Rei SENHOR.

7Faça barulho o mar com sua plenitude; o mundo com os que nele habitam.

8Que os rios batam palmas, que as montanhas juntamente se alegrem,

9Diante do SENHOR, porque ele vem para julgar a terra; ele julgará ao mundo com justiça, e aos povos de forma correta.

Explanation

This psalm picks up themes from Psalm 96 and reinforces the idea that God's salvation is not a secret kept only for Israel, but something openly shown in the sight of the nations (v. 2). The personification of nature — rivers clapping their hands, mountains singing for joy — is a Hebrew poetic device used to express that all creation shares in the joy of God's justice. This psalm directly inspired the well-known Christmas hymn 'Joy to the World.' The application today is that God's justice and salvation are cause for universal celebration, not something reserved for a select few.
