Salmos 31

BLIVRE · Chapter 31/150

1Salmo de Davi, para o regente: Eu confio em ti, SENHOR; não me deixes envergonhado para sempre; livra-me por tua justiça.

2Inclina a mim os teus ouvidos, faze-me escapar depressa [do perigo] ; sê tu por minha rocha firme, por casa fortíssima, para me salvar.

3Porque tu [és] minha rocha e minha fortaleza; guia-me e conduz-me por causa do teu nome.

4Tira-me da rede que me prepararam em segredo, pois tu [és] minha força.

5Em tuas mãos eu confio meu espírito; tu me resgataste, SENHOR, Deus da verdade.

Summary

David entrusts his life into God's hands amid enemies and physical and emotional anguish, feeling forgotten like a broken vessel, but ends by exhorting the people to love the LORD and be strong.

Explanation

This psalm blends deep lament (the suffering is described with intense physical and emotional detail, including the feeling of being forgotten 'as a dead man') with unshakable confidence. The phrase 'into thine hand I commit my spirit' (v.5) is quoted almost verbatim by Jesus in His final moments on the cross (Luke 23:46), showing how He prayed using the language of the psalms He knew by heart. Today's application: consciously entrusting one's own life and difficult circumstances to God is a prayer practice with deep roots, validated across generations.

Fun facts

  • Verse 5 ('into thine hand I commit my spirit') is quoted almost word for word by Jesus on the cross, according to Luke 23:46 — one of the last phrases He utters before dying.
  • Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, also seems to echo this phrase in Acts 7:59 ('Lord Jesus, receive my spirit'), showing how it became a prayer of trust at the hour of death in the early Christian tradition.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. Salmos 31:1Opens the psalm with a declaration of trust followed by a direct request: that this trust not end in shame, but in deliverance.
  2. Salmos 31:2Asks for urgent rescue, using two images of solid protection, a rock and a fortified house, to describe the kind of security he needs.
  3. Salmos 31:3Justifies the request for guidance with the same rock image, but now asking not only for protection but for direction, and again for the sake of God’s name, not his own merit.
  4. Salmos 31:4Uses the image of a hidden net set by enemies, asking to be pulled out of it by the strength that only comes from God.
  5. Salmos 31:5This is the same phrase Jesus uses while dying on the cross, in Luke 23. It’s a prayer of total surrender in a moment of extreme danger, entrusting one’s own life to God when there’s nothing left to do.
  6. Salmos 31:6Draws a clear contrast: he rejects those who give themselves to empty, deceitful things, probably idols, and reaffirms that his trust is in the LORD alone.
  7. Salmos 31:7Describes a joy born from feeling truly seen: God doesn’t just know about his affliction, He knew his troubled soul up close, not from a distance.
  8. Salmos 31:8Describes deliverance with the same wide-open-space image used in other psalms: coming out of a suffocating tight spot into a place where his feet can move freely.
  9. Salmos 31:9For the Hebrews, emotional suffering wasn’t confined to the mind: it affected the whole body, including the belly, seen as part of the center of the deepest emotions, not just a digestive organ.
  10. Salmos 31:10Describes a complete wearing down, whole years consumed in sorrow and sighing, with even his bones feeling the physical weight of guilt and pain.
  11. Salmos 31:11Describes the social isolation that came along with his suffering: not only his enemies, but even neighbors and acquaintances started avoiding him, fleeing when they saw him in the street.
  12. Salmos 31:12A broken clay vessel can’t be repaired or used anymore, it was simply thrown away. The comparison shows the feeling of being discarded and forgotten by everyone around him.
  13. Salmos 31:13Describes the fear of hearing people plotting in secret, a real danger that they were scheming to take his life.
  14. Salmos 31:14After so much describing danger and suffering, the simple turn comes: even so, he chooses to trust and declare that God is still his God.
  15. Salmos 31:15Declares that his very lifetime is in God’s hands, not in the hands of the enemies trying to control or destroy him.
  16. Salmos 31:16Asks for the same favor described in other psalms as a shining face: a request for visible attention and care coming from God.
  17. Salmos 31:17Asks for the opposite of what he fears for himself: that he not be put to shame, but that the wicked be silenced, as if struck mute forever in the grave.
  18. Salmos 31:18Focuses specifically on lying lips that speak with pride and contempt against those who do right, asking that this kind of speech be silenced.
  19. Salmos 31:19An exclamation of genuine amazement at God’s goodness, stored up for those who respect Him and shown publicly, in front of everyone.
  20. Salmos 31:20Uses the image of a hiding place within God’s own presence, protected specifically from the wickedness of tongues and the strife caused by gossip and slander.
  21. Salmos 31:21Gives thanks for a mercy he describes as extraordinary, comparing the security he received to the protection of a fortified city.
  22. Salmos 31:22Confesses a moment of despair when he even thought he had been cut off from God’s sight, but admits that feeling was wrong: the cry was indeed heard.
  23. Salmos 31:23Calls all the faithful to love God, explaining the reason with a contrast: He protects the faithful, but repays in full measure those who act with pride.
  24. Salmos 31:24Closes the psalm with the same kind of encouragement found in Psalm 27: have courage and wait on God, trusting that He Himself will strengthen the heart of those who wait.
