Summary

One of the most beloved psalms of trust: 'I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help' — describing a guardian God who never sleeps or slumbers, watching over his people's going out and coming in.

Explanation

This second 'Song of Degrees' probably reflected the relief pilgrims felt when they caught sight, in the distance, of the hills surrounding Jerusalem, knowing that the journey (often dangerous, because of bandits or weather) was nearing its end. The repetition of the word 'keep/watch' six times in eight verses emphasizes the central idea of constant, vigilant protection. The application for today is to remember, especially in moments of travel, change, or uncertainty, that God's protection never takes a break or rests.
