When Sleep Won't Come
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
Psalm 4:8
I saw you again last night, staring at the ceiling in the dark while the house slept and your mind wouldn't stop. The same thoughts circling, like a movie you've already seen and didn't want to watch again.
My son, my daughter, sleep runs away when the heart thinks it has to stand guard alone. But I neither slumber nor sleep — there is no hour of the day or night when I stop watching over you. You can close your eyes, because I stand watch.
Tonight, when your mind wants to race again, talk to me instead of arguing with your own thoughts. Hand over every name, every fear, every doubt that visits you after the light goes out. I receive all of it right now, and I want to give you back a truly restful night.
