Word of the Father · Day 285/366

Grateful for Today's Bread

Give us this day our daily bread.

Matthew 6:11

I saw you yesterday worried about a month that hasn't even begun, about bills due three weeks from now, about a future you don't even know how it will unfold. And in the middle of all that anxiety, today's bread went unnoticed on your table.

I taught my children to ask for their daily bread, not the whole year's bread stored away. That isn't carelessness about the future — it's trust dispensed in daily doses. You can plan, yes, that's wise — but the gratitude I want to build in you lives in today, not held hostage by an uncertain tomorrow.

Look at today's table. Did you have something to eat? Did you have a roof over your head? Then today's bread I have already given. Give thanks for it before drowning in worry over bread whose time to ask for hasn't even come yet. Whoever learns to give thanks for today's bread also learns to trust for tomorrow's.
