2 Crônicas 29

BLIVRE · Chapter 29/36

5E disse-lhes: Ouvi-me, levitas, e santificai-vos agora, e santificareis a casa do SENHOR o Deus de vossos pais, e tirareis do santuário a imundícia.

12Então os levitas se levantaram, Maate filho de Amasai, e Joel filho de Azarias, dos filhos de Coate; e dos filhos de Merari, Quis filho de Abdi, e Azarias filho de Jealelel; e dos filhos de Gérson, Joá filho de Zima, e Éden filho de Joá;

13E dos filhos de Elisafã, Sinri e Jeuel; e dos filhos de Asafe, Zacarias e Matanias;

Summary

Hezekiah, son of Ahaz, becomes king and immediately begins a massive religious reform, reopening and purifying the temple that his father had shut and defiled. Priests and Levites are reorganized, and a great consecration ceremony is held with sacrifices and music.

Explanation

Hezekiah represents a dramatic turnaround after his father's disastrous reign, beginning his rule immediately with decisive action: in the first month of the first year, he is already reopening the doors of the temple. His speech to the priests and Levites honestly acknowledges the gravity of the inherited situation, admitting that 'the wrath of the LORD was upon Judah and Jerusalem.' The purification process, removing all the impurity accumulated during Ahaz's idolatrous reign, takes sixteen full days, showing the extent of the corruption that needed to be reversed. The final celebration, with vibrant music and abundant sacrifices, marks one of the most complete and successful moments of spiritual reform in all the history recorded in Chronicles.

Fun facts

  • The fact that only sixteen days were needed to completely purify the temple, despite years of neglect and defilement under Ahaz, suggests an extraordinarily rapid and committed mobilization of priests and Levites under Hezekiah's new leadership.
  • Hezekiah explicitly reintroduces the musical instruments originally established by David centuries earlier, showing how he consciously sought to restore not just basic religious practice, but the entire pattern of worship established by the dynasty's great founding king.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. 2 Crônicas 29:1Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he governed twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; his mother’s name was Abijah, daughter of Zechariah.
  2. 2 Crônicas 29:2The Chronicler gives one of the most positive verdicts in the book: Hezekiah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, following the example of David.
  3. 2 Crônicas 29:3Right in his first year, Hezekiah reopens the doors of the temple that his father Ahaz had shut — a detail that shows the scale of the religious neglect he inherited: the temple’s doors were literally closed.
  4. 2 Crônicas 29:4Hezekiah summons the priests and Levites and gathers them in the east square of the temple, the first step of the great religious reform that dominates this chapter.
  5. 2 Crônicas 29:5Hezekiah asks the Levites to sanctify themselves and purify the temple, removing all the uncleanness that had built up inside it.
  6. 2 Crônicas 29:6Hezekiah openly acknowledges that their ancestors forsook the Lord, did what was evil, and turned their backs on the tabernacle — a direct confession of the failure of Ahaz’s previous reign.
  7. 2 Crônicas 29:7He lists the concrete problems: the temple doors shut, the lamps put out, no incense burned, no burnt offering presented to the God of Israel.
  8. 2 Crônicas 29:8Because of this neglect, the wrath of the Lord fell on Judah and Jerusalem, leaving the people in a state of shock and desolation, something they could see for themselves.
  9. 2 Crônicas 29:9Hezekiah recalls the harsh consequences: fathers killed by the sword, sons, daughters, and wives carried off into captivity.
  10. 2 Crônicas 29:10Hezekiah announces his central purpose: to make a covenant with the Lord so that His fierce anger will turn away from the people.
  11. 2 Crônicas 29:11Hezekiah asks the Levites not to be negligent, since they were chosen precisely to stand before God as ministers and to be in charge of the incense.
  12. 2 Crônicas 29:12Levites from several different families — Kohathites, Merarites, Gershonites, and other lines — rise up promptly to answer the king’s call.
  13. 2 Crônicas 29:13The list of Levites continues with descendants of Elizaphan, Asaph, and other families, all presenting themselves for the work of purification.
  14. 2 Crônicas 29:14Rounding out the list are also descendants of Heman and Jeduthun, showing that practically every Levitical family took part in the task.
  15. 2 Crônicas 29:15These Levites gather their brothers, sanctify themselves, and come in obedience to the king’s order, carrying out what had been commanded according to the word of the Lord.
  16. 2 Crônicas 29:16The priests go into the temple to purify it, remove all the uncleanness found inside, and carry it out to the courtyard, from where the Levites take it out to dump in the brook Kidron.
  17. 2 Crônicas 29:17The work of purification begins on the first day of the first month and proceeds in stages, finishing completely on the sixteenth day of the same month — sixteen days of intense cleaning.
  18. 2 Crônicas 29:18The leaders return to Hezekiah and report: they have purified the whole temple, including the altar of burnt offering, its utensils, and the table of the showbread.
  19. 2 Crônicas 29:19They also report that they have restored and consecrated the utensils that Ahaz had discarded during his unfaithful reign, and these are now back in place before the altar.
  20. 2 Crônicas 29:20Hezekiah rises early in the morning, gathers the leaders of the city, and goes up to the temple to carry forward the restoration ceremony.
  21. 2 Crônicas 29:21Seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats are brought as a sin offering, covering the kingdom, the sanctuary, and all the people of Judah.
  22. 2 Crônicas 29:22The priests slaughter the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, sprinkling the blood of each one on the altar in turn.
  23. 2 Crônicas 29:23The male goats are brought as a sin offering before the king and the assembly, who lay their hands on them, a ritual gesture identifying them with the sacrifice.
  24. 2 Crônicas 29:24The priests slaughter the goats and use the blood to make atonement for all Israel, fulfilling the king’s command that this sacrifice cover the whole people.
  25. 2 Crônicas 29:25Hezekiah stations the Levites in the temple with cymbals, harps, and lyres, following instructions going back to David, the seer Gad, and the prophet Nathan — an ancient musical tradition being restored.
  26. 2 Crônicas 29:26The Levites and priests take their places with David’s instruments and the trumpets, ready for the musical celebration that accompanies the sacrifices.
  27. 2 Crônicas 29:27As soon as the burnt offering begins on the altar, the song to the Lord begins as well, accompanied by trumpets and the instruments of David.
  28. 2 Crônicas 29:28The whole assembly bows down while the singing and the trumpets continue, lasting the entire time of the sacrifice.
  29. 2 Crônicas 29:29When the burnt offering is finished, the king and everyone present kneel down and worship together.
  30. 2 Crônicas 29:30Hezekiah and the leaders ask the Levites to praise the Lord with the words composed by David and the seer Asaph, and the people sing with joy, bowing down in worship.
  31. 2 Crônicas 29:31Hezekiah declares that the people are now consecrated to the Lord and invites everyone to bring sacrifices and thank offerings — and the congregation responds by bringing all of it willingly.
  32. 2 Crônicas 29:32The total number of burnt offerings brought by the congregation comes to seventy bulls, a hundred rams, and two hundred lambs, all offered to the Lord.
  33. 2 Crônicas 29:33Besides the burnt offerings, the people also consecrate six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep as an additional offering.
  34. 2 Crônicas 29:34After years of neglect, there were not enough purified priests to handle the workload, so the Levites have to help skin the sacrifices, a task that would normally belong only to the priests. The text honestly acknowledges that the Levites proved more diligent about sanctifying themselves than the priests were at that moment.
  35. 2 Crônicas 29:35Burnt offerings in great abundance, together with the fat of the peace offerings and the drink offerings, fully restore the operation of the temple.
  36. 2 Crônicas 29:36Hezekiah and all the people rejoice because God had prepared the people’s heart for this work, which came about quickly and in good order.
