2 Crônicas 27

BLIVRE · Chapter 27/36

Summary

Jotham, son of Uzziah, becomes king and follows his father's right ways, but without committing the same mistake of entering the temple. He strengthens the kingdom with building projects, defeats the Ammonites in battle, and is described consistently in a positive light throughout his reign.

Explanation

Jotham is one of the few kings described without major recorded failures, apparently learning from his father Uzziah's fatal mistake and maintaining proper respect for the boundaries between royal authority and priestly function. The text briefly notes that, despite Jotham's personal faithfulness, 'the people did yet corruptly,' acknowledging that one leader's righteousness does not automatically guarantee the spiritual transformation of an entire nation. His brief sixteen-year reign is described succinctly but consistently positively, serving as a relatively stable interlude before the disastrous reign of his son Ahaz, which will be described in the following chapter.

Fun facts

  • The text briefly mentions that Jotham 'entered not into the temple of the LORD,' a phrase scholars interpret as a direct and deliberate reference to the specific mistake made by his father Uzziah, showing that he had clearly learned that lesson.
  • Despite his generally positive reign, this is one of the shortest chapters dedicated to a single king in all of 2 Chronicles, suggesting that his stability, though commendable, did not generate events as dramatic as those of other kings mentioned in the book.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. 2 Crônicas 27:1Jotham was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he governed sixteen years in Jerusalem; his mother’s name was Jerushah, daughter of Zadok.
  2. 2 Crônicas 27:2Jotham avoids repeating the exact mistake of his own father, Uzziah, and does not enter the temple to burn incense. It is one of the few moments in the book where a king learns directly from a predecessor’s recorded mistake instead of repeating it.
  3. 2 Crônicas 27:3Jotham builds the upper gate of the temple and carries out extensive work on the wall of Ophel, strengthening Jerusalem’s defenses.
  4. 2 Crônicas 27:4He also builds cities in the hill country of Judah, along with forts and towers in the wooded areas.
  5. 2 Crônicas 27:5Jotham defeats the Ammonites in war, and they begin paying a hundred talents of silver along with thousands of measures of wheat and barley for three years running as tribute.
  6. 2 Crônicas 27:6The closing line about Jotham — that he grew strong because “he prepared his ways before the Lord his God” — sums up a theme repeated throughout the book: religious obedience and political success go hand in hand in the logic of Chronicles.
  7. 2 Crônicas 27:7The rest of Jotham’s deeds, including his wars, are recorded in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.
  8. 2 Crônicas 27:8The text repeats the numbers from the start of the chapter: twenty-five years old when he took the throne, sixteen years reigning in Jerusalem.
  9. 2 Crônicas 27:9Jotham dies and is buried in the City of David; his son Ahaz takes the throne, opening one of the most troubled reigns in the book.
