Números 17

BLIVRE · Chapter 17/36

1E falou o SENHOR a Moisés, dizendo:

4E as porás no tabernáculo do testemunho diante do testemunho, onde eu me declararei a vós.

7E Moisés pôs as varas diante do SENHOR no tabernáculo do testemunho.

Summary

To settle once and for all the murmuring about priestly leadership, God asks for a staff from each tribe, bearing the name of its leader, to be kept in the tent of meeting. The next day, only Aaron's staff blossoms, buds, and produces almonds.

Explanation

This miraculous and unmistakable sign — a dry wooden staff producing flowers and fruit overnight — undeniably and visibly confirmed God's choice of Aaron and his line for the priesthood, settling any questioning of legitimacy once and for all. The staff was kept permanently as a memorial warning for future generations who might be tempted to repeat Korah's rebellion. The people's terrified reaction at the end of the chapter ('shall we all perish?') shows the lasting psychological impact of these severe judgments, also revealing a growing understanding of God's dangerous holiness when approached without proper reverence.

Fun facts

  • According to Hebrews 9:4, Aaron's staff that budded was kept inside the ark of the covenant itself, together with the manna and the tablets of the law — three objects that testified to God's provision, authority, and covenant with Israel.
  • Almonds were among the first trees to blossom in spring in Israel, and their Hebrew name (shaked) comes from the word for 'to watch' or 'to be alert' — the same root used by Jeremiah in a prophetic wordplay (Jeremiah 1:11-12) about God 'watching' to fulfill His word.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. Números 17:1After the tragedy of Korah, the Lord speaks to Moses to give the people a final sign of who truly held priestly authority.
  2. Números 17:2The instruction is to gather a rod from each tribal leader, twelve in all, each one with the name of the respective leader written on it.
  3. Números 17:3In the case of the tribe of Levi, it was Aaron’s name that was to be written on the rod, since each head of a family was entitled to only one rod.
  4. Números 17:4The twelve rods were to be placed in the tent of the congregation, before the ark, where God met with Moses.
  5. Números 17:5The promise was clear: the rod of the man chosen by God would blossom, putting an end once and for all to the people’s complaints against the leadership.
  6. Números 17:6Moses passes on the instruction, and each leader hands over his rod, twelve in all, including Aaron’s among them.
  7. Números 17:7Moses places the twelve rods before the Lord, inside the tent where the ark of the testimony stood.
  8. Números 17:8To settle once and for all the dispute over who held priestly authority, each tribe leaves a rod in the tent of the congregation overnight. The next day, only Aaron’s rod had blossomed and produced almonds, a clear, visible sign that his selection was legitimate, with no need for further argument.
  9. Números 17:9The day after the miracle of the blossoming rod, Moses brings out all the rods from before the Lord, and each leader receives his own back.
  10. Números 17:10God commands that Aaron’s rod be kept back before the ark, as a lasting sign against future rebellions, so the people would not die because of it.
  11. Números 17:11Moses obeys exactly the instruction he received, keeping the rod as a lasting sign.
  12. Números 17:12Shaken by everything that had happened, the people tell Moses they feel that everyone is doomed to die.
  13. Números 17:13They fear that any approach to the tabernacle will bring death, anxiously asking whether they will all be consumed — a fear the next chapter is specifically there to resolve.
