2 Reis 11

BLIVRE · Chapter 11/25

5E mandou-lhes, dizendo: Isto é o que haveis de fazer: a terceira parte de vós, os que entrarão o sábado, terão a guarda da casa do rei;

12Tirando logo Joiada ao filho do rei, pôs-lhe a coroa e o testemunho, e fizeram-lhe rei ungindo-lhe; e batendo as mãos disseram: Viva o rei!

13E ouvindo Atalia o estrondo do povo que corria, entrou ao povo no templo do SENHOR;

Summary

Athaliah, mother of Ahaziah, seizes the throne of Judah by killing the entire royal family, but the infant Joash is hidden and saved by his aunt Jehosheba. Six years later, the priest Jehoiada carefully organizes a coup to crown Joash, and Athaliah is executed.

Explanation

This is the only moment in all the history of Judah in which the Davidic line was completely threatened with extinction — had Athaliah fully succeeded, the promise of an eternal descendant of David (2 Samuel 7) would have been broken. Jehosheba's courage in hiding the baby and the careful planning of the priest Jehoiada, using the structure of the temple itself and the royal guard, show how God preserves his promises through courageous individuals acting in critical moments, often without fanfare or immediate recognition.

Fun facts

  • Jehosheba, who saves the baby Joash, was the wife of the high priest Jehoiada, according to 2 Chronicles 22:11 — a family connection that helps explain how she had access to hide the child inside the temple itself for six years.
  • The use of the spears and shields that 'had belonged to King David' (kept in the temple) to arm the guard during Joash's coronation was a deliberate symbolic gesture, visually connecting the new king to the historical legitimacy of the Davidic dynasty.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. 2 Reis 11:1Athaliah, mother of Ahaziah and granddaughter of Omri, tries to wipe out the whole Davidic line so she can keep the throne for herself alone. A baby, Joash, escapes, hidden inside the temple itself for six years thanks to the dead king's sister.
  2. 2 Reis 11:2Jehosheba, sister of Ahaziah, secretly saves the baby Joash in the midst of the slaughter, hiding him and his nurse in an inner room, out of Athaliah's reach.
  3. 2 Reis 11:3Joash stays hidden for six years inside the temple itself, while Athaliah rules Judah (southern kingdom) not knowing the rightful heir is still alive.
  4. 2 Reis 11:4Jehoiada sets up a military operation inside the temple, rotating guards on sabbath shifts to avoid raising suspicion, until he reveals the hidden heir and crowns him with armed backing. It's a religious and military coup coordinated down to the smallest detail.
  5. 2 Reis 11:5The instructions detail the guard rotation: a third stays on duty on the sabbath protecting the royal palace.
  6. 2 Reis 11:6Another third guards the gate of Sur, and the last third stays at the gate behind the guard — covering the access points to keep strangers away.
  7. 2 Reis 11:7The other two-thirds, the ones who would normally be off duty on the sabbath, keep watch at the temple, alongside the king.
  8. 2 Reis 11:8The guards are to surround the king with weapons in hand and kill anyone who breaks ranks, escorting him wherever he goes.
  9. 2 Reis 11:9The officers carry out Jehoiada's orders exactly, gathering their men both on duty and off, all reporting to the priest.
  10. 2 Reis 11:10Jehoiada gives the officers the spears and shields that had belonged to King David, kept in the temple — symbolic weapons of Judah's glorious past.
  11. 2 Reis 11:11The guards take up position, weapons in hand, from one side of the temple to the other, surrounding the king on every side.
  12. 2 Reis 11:12Jehoiada brings out the hidden young prince, places the crown on him, hands him the testimony of the law, and the people clap and shout: long live the king!
  13. 2 Reis 11:13Athaliah hears the noise of the guard and the people and goes to the temple to see what is happening.
  14. 2 Reis 11:14Jehoiada makes a point of not having Athaliah executed inside the sacred area of the temple, having her taken out first. It's a ritual concern not to defile the space even in the middle of a violent coup.
  15. 2 Reis 11:15Jehoiada orders the officers to take Athaliah out from the ranks and kill anyone who tries to defend her, but with one condition: no blood is to be shed inside the temple.
  16. 2 Reis 11:16The guards take her by the horses' entrance to the palace, and it's out there that she is put to death, away from the sacred space.
  17. 2 Reis 11:17Jehoiada makes a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people, renewing the commitment to be God's people, and also between the king and the people.
  18. 2 Reis 11:18The people tear down the temple of Baal, smash its altars and images, kill the priest of Baal, and Jehoiada appoints officers in charge of the temple of the Lord.
  19. 2 Reis 11:19The young king is escorted from the temple to the palace through the guard's gate, and finally sits on the royal throne that was rightfully his.
  20. 2 Reis 11:20The people rejoice and the city is at peace after Athaliah is put to death — the end of six years of usurpation of the throne of Judah (south).
  21. 2 Reis 11:21Joash was only seven years old when he was crowned king of Judah (southern kingdom).
