2 Samuel 7

BLIVRE · Chapter 7/24

5Vai e dize a meu servo Davi: Assim disse o SENHOR: Tu me edificarás casa em que eu more?

8Agora, pois, dirás assim a meu servo Davi: Assim disse o SENHOR dos exércitos: Eu te tomei da malhada, de detrás das ovelhas, para que fosses príncipe sobre meu povo, sobre Israel;

14Eu serei a ele pai, e ele me será filho. E se ele fizer mal, eu lhe castigarei com vara de homens, e com açoites de filhos de homens;

Summary

David wishes to build a temple for the Lord, but the prophet Nathan brings word from God that it will not be David, but his son, who will build the house. Instead, God promises David an eternal dynasty. David responds with a prayer of gratitude.

Explanation

This is one of the most important chapters in the entire Bible: the so-called 'Davidic Covenant.' God promises that David's throne would be established forever — a promise the prophets later link to the Messiah, and which the New Testament applies to Jesus as the 'son of David.' It is interesting that God gently declines David's offer (to build a temple) and instead gives him something greater. The practical lesson is that God often has plans different from ours, and even when we do not do exactly what we had planned for Him, He may have something even greater in store.

Fun facts

  • The expression 'I will make you a great name' echoes the promise made to Abraham in Genesis 12:2, linking the covenant with David to the original covenant with the patriarchs.
  • The temple David wanted to build would be raised by his son Solomon decades later, exactly as Nathan had prophesied (see 1 Kings 6-8).

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. 2 Samuel 7:1David is already settled in his palace, and the LORD has given him rest from all his enemies around him—the calm setting in which this chapter’s great promise is born.
  2. 2 Samuel 7:2David tells the prophet Nathan that he lives in a house of cedar while the ark of God still dwells only within curtains.
  3. 2 Samuel 7:3At first, Nathan encourages David to go do all that is in his heart, telling him the LORD is with him.
  4. 2 Samuel 7:4But that very night the word of the LORD comes directly to Nathan, correcting what he had just told David.
  5. 2 Samuel 7:5God asks, through Nathan, whether David is really the one who should build Him a house to dwell in.
  6. 2 Samuel 7:6God recalls that He has never dwelt in a fixed house since He brought Israel out of Egypt—He has always moved about in a tent and a tabernacle, traveling with the people.
  7. 2 Samuel 7:7God says He never asked any of the tribes of Israel to build Him a house of cedar—the initiative had not come from Him.
  8. 2 Samuel 7:8God reminds David where he came from: taken from following the sheep, from the work of a shepherd, to become ruler over all His people Israel.
  9. 2 Samuel 7:9God recalls that He has been with David everywhere he went, has cut off all his enemies, and has made him a great name, like the name of the great men of the earth.
  10. 2 Samuel 7:10God promises a fixed, secure place for Israel, where the people will settle and no longer be oppressed as they were before.
  11. 2 Samuel 7:11God promises rest from all his enemies and, more than that, promises that it is He who will build David a “house”—not a temple, but a dynasty.
  12. 2 Samuel 7:12This is the key promise: when David dies, God will raise up his offspring after him, and will establish that offspring’s kingdom.
  13. 2 Samuel 7:13God promises that it will be David’s son, not David himself, who builds a house “for my name”—the central wordplay of the chapter, since “house” means both the physical temple and David’s lasting dynasty.
  14. 2 Samuel 7:14Being corrected “with the rod of men” describes ordinary discipline from a father to a son, not a break in the covenant—even when David’s descendants fail, the promise of a dynasty still stands, unlike what happened with Saul.
  15. 2 Samuel 7:15God promises that His mercy will never depart from this line as it departed from Saul—the covenant with David’s family is different, more secure.
  16. 2 Samuel 7:16The central point of the chapter: David’s house and kingdom will be made sure forever, a throne established forever—the foundation of the messianic hope running through the whole Bible.
  17. 2 Samuel 7:17Nathan goes back and tells David all these words, exactly as God had revealed them to him in this vision.
  18. 2 Samuel 7:18David goes in and sits before the LORD, asking humbly who he is and what his house is, that He has brought him this far.
  19. 2 Samuel 7:19David marvels that the promise reaches beyond himself, extending to future generations—something he recognizes as no ordinary way of dealing with men.
  20. 2 Samuel 7:20David says he has nothing more to add, for the LORD God already knows His servant well.
  21. 2 Samuel 7:21David acknowledges that all this has come about because of God’s own word and His own heart, and that God Himself has made this greatness known to him.
  22. 2 Samuel 7:22David praises God’s greatness, declaring that there is none like Him, and no God besides Him, according to all they had ever heard.
  23. 2 Samuel 7:23David celebrates that Israel is a people unique on the earth, redeemed by God for Himself, with great and awesome deeds done before the nations He drove out.
  24. 2 Samuel 7:24David acknowledges that God has confirmed Israel as His own people forever, and has become their God in this covenant.
  25. 2 Samuel 7:25David asks God to confirm forever the word He spoke about him and his house, doing as He has promised.
  26. 2 Samuel 7:26David desires that God’s name be magnified forever, acknowledged as God over Israel, with the house of David established before Him.
  27. 2 Samuel 7:27David explains that it was precisely because God had revealed this promise of a dynasty that he found the courage to pray this prayer.
  28. 2 Samuel 7:28David affirms his confidence: God’s words are true, and it is He Himself who has promised this good thing to His servant.
  29. 2 Samuel 7:29David closes by asking God to bless his house forever, trusting that the divine blessing will last for generations.
