1 Reis 8

ARC · Chapter 8/22

47E na terra aonde forem levados em captiveiro tornarem em si, e se converterem, e na terra do seu captiveiro te supplicarem, dizendo: Peccámos, e perversamente obrámos, e commettemos iniquidade;

48E se converterem a ti com todo o seu coração e com toda a sua alma, na terra de seus inimigos que os levaram em captiveiro, e orarem a ti para a banda da sua terra que déste a seus paes, para esta cidade que elegeste, e para esta casa que edifiquei ao teu nome;

49Ouve então nos céus, assento da tua habitação, a sua oração e a sua supplica, e faze-lhes justiça;

Summary

The ark of the covenant is brought into the new temple amid great celebration, and the glory of the LORD fills the place like a cloud. Solomon offers a long dedication prayer, asking that God hear the prayers of the people directed toward that place, even in times of sin, exile, or the pleas of foreigners.

Explanation

This is one of the most theologically rich moments in the Old Testament. Solomon's prayer acknowledges that no temple, however great, can contain God ('the heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you'), but asks that it serve as a focal point of prayer and presence. Remarkably, Solomon already foresees and prays in advance for the people's future exile, showing a deep understanding that the covenant with God involves both blessing and discipline. The mention of foreigners coming to pray at the temple also shows a surprisingly inclusive vision for the time — the temple was not for Israelites alone.

Fun facts

  • The dedication of the temple took place in the month of Ethanim (the seventh month, roughly today's September-October), coinciding with the Feast of Tabernacles, one of Israel's three great pilgrimage festivals.
  • The dedication sacrifice included 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep, a number so large that the bronze altar in the courtyard had to be supplemented, consecrating the middle of the courtyard for the extra sacrifices.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. 1 Reis 8:1Solomon summons the elders, the tribal chiefs, and the family leaders of Israel to Jerusalem to bring the ark of the covenant up from the City of David, that is, from Zion, to its new place in the Temple.
  2. 1 Reis 8:2All the people of Israel gather for the feast in the month of Ethanim, the seventh month — the moving of the ark happens during a great annual celebration.
  3. 1 Reis 8:3The elders arrive, and it is the priests themselves who lift the ark to carry it.
  4. 1 Reis 8:4They bring up the ark, the tent of meeting, and all the sacred articles that were in it, carried by the priests and the Levites.
  5. 1 Reis 8:5Solomon and the whole assembly of Israel sacrifice so many sheep and oxen before the ark that they cannot even be counted.
  6. 1 Reis 8:6The priests put the ark in its final place, in the inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place, under the wings of the cherubim.
  7. 1 Reis 8:7The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark, covering both it and the poles used to carry it.
  8. 1 Reis 8:8The poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the Holy Place just in front, but not from outside — and they stayed there just like that as long as the Temple stood.
  9. 1 Reis 8:9Here the ark holds only the two tablets of the law; other biblical traditions, such as the letter to the Hebrews, also mention a jar of manna and Aaron’s rod. Scholars understand these as different traditions about the ark’s contents, with no clear way to reconcile the two.
  10. 1 Reis 8:10The cloud was the biblical way of representing God’s presence without describing it physically. The same cloud that guided Israel in the wilderness now fills the newly finished Temple, a sign of divine approval for the project.
  11. 1 Reis 8:11When the priests come out, a cloud fills the house with such force that they cannot even stand to continue the service — the glory of the Lord had taken hold of the Temple.
  12. 1 Reis 8:12Facing the cloud, Solomon comments that the Lord said He would dwell in thick darkness — acknowledging that God’s presence always comes somewhat hidden, veiled.
  13. 1 Reis 8:13Solomon declares that he has built God a magnificent house, a place for Him to dwell in forever.
  14. 1 Reis 8:14The king turns around and blesses the whole assembly of Israel, standing there watching.
  15. 1 Reis 8:15Solomon blesses God for having fulfilled with His own hand what He promised with His own mouth to David.
  16. 1 Reis 8:16God recalls that, since bringing Israel out of Egypt, He never chose a city for a temple, but He did choose David to lead His people.
  17. 1 Reis 8:17David himself had it in his heart to build a house for the name of the Lord.
  18. 1 Reis 8:18God told David it was good that he had that desire in his heart, even though he would not be the one to build it.
  19. 1 Reis 8:19Instead, God determined that it would be David’s son who would build that house.
  20. 1 Reis 8:20Solomon confirms the fulfilled promise: he is now sitting on the throne of Israel as God promised, and he has built the house for the name of the Lord.
  21. 1 Reis 8:21There he has prepared a place for the ark, which holds the covenant God made with Israel’s ancestors when He brought them out of Egypt.
  22. 1 Reis 8:22Solomon stands before the altar of the Lord, in front of the whole assembly, and stretches out his hands toward heaven — the posture that opens the great prayer of dedication for the Temple.
  23. 1 Reis 8:23Solomon begins the prayer declaring that there is no God like the Lord, neither in heaven nor on earth, a God who keeps covenant and mercy with those who walk before Him with all their heart.
  24. 1 Reis 8:24He praises God for having fulfilled with His hand what He promised with His mouth to David, something being seen happening that very day.
  25. 1 Reis 8:25Now Solomon asks that God also fulfill the rest of the promise: that David’s line never lack a successor on the throne, as long as his descendants walk faithfully.
  26. 1 Reis 8:26He asks that God confirm and fulfill this word given to David.
  27. 1 Reis 8:27In the middle of the very prayer of dedication, Solomon acknowledges that the Temple is not a box that contains God. It is described more as a meeting point, an address prayers are directed toward, than as a dwelling in the literal sense.
  28. 1 Reis 8:28Solomon asks that God turn toward his prayer and plea, and hear the cry he makes that day before Him.
  29. 1 Reis 8:29He asks that God’s eyes stay open toward that house day and night — the place where God said His name would be — to hear any prayer made there.
  30. 1 Reis 8:30He asks that God hear the pleas of himself and the people whenever they pray facing this place, and that He forgive from His place in heaven.
  31. 1 Reis 8:31The prayer’s first specific case: when someone sins against a neighbor and is put under oath before the altar of this house.
  32. 1 Reis 8:32Solomon asks that God hear from heaven, act, and judge: condemning the guilty according to their conduct, and clearing the innocent according to their righteousness.
  33. 1 Reis 8:33Second case: when Israel is defeated by an enemy because of sin, and the people turn back to God, confessing His name and praying in this house.
  34. 1 Reis 8:34Third case in the prayer: when Israel is defeated and turns back to God, may He hear from heaven, forgive, and bring the people back to the land given to their ancestors.
  35. 1 Reis 8:35Fourth case: when the sky is shut and there is no rain because of sin, and the people pray facing this place, confessing God’s name and turning from their sin because of the punishment.
  36. 1 Reis 8:36Solomon asks that God forgive, teach the people the right way to walk, and send rain again on the land He gave as an inheritance.
  37. 1 Reis 8:37Fifth case, a list of possible disasters: famine, plague, blight on the crops, locusts, an enemy siege, or any other calamity.
  38. 1 Reis 8:38Whenever anyone, any single person among all the people of Israel, feels the weight of trouble in their heart and stretches out their hands toward this house.
  39. 1 Reis 8:39Solomon asks that God hear from heaven, forgive, act, and give to each one according to their ways, since only God truly knows every human heart.
  40. 1 Reis 8:40The purpose of all this: that the people fear God all the days they live in the land given to their ancestors.
  41. 1 Reis 8:41It is unusual for an ancient text to set aside part of the dedication prayer to ask that God also listen to the foreigner coming from a distant land. It is a sign that the Temple, from the original plan, was not meant to be closed off to Israelites alone.
  42. 1 Reis 8:42Continuing about the foreigner: he will hear about God’s great name, His mighty hand, and outstretched arm, and so he will come and pray facing this house.
  43. 1 Reis 8:43Solomon asks that God grant whatever the foreigner asks, so that all the peoples of the earth may know God’s name and fear Him as Israel does, knowing that this house bears His name.
  44. 1 Reis 8:44Another case: when Israel goes to war against an enemy, wherever God sends them, and they pray facing this city and this house built for His name.
  45. 1 Reis 8:45Solomon asks that God hear from heaven their prayer and plea in those moments, and uphold the cause of the people.
  46. 1 Reis 8:46A case that acknowledges human reality: when they sin — because there is no one who never sins — and God, angry, hands them over to an enemy who carries them off captive, near or far.
  47. 1 Reis 8:47If in the land of captivity they come to their senses, repent, and plead, saying, “We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness.”
  48. 1 Reis 8:48If they turn back to God with all their heart in the land of their enemies, and pray facing their own land, this city, and this house.
  49. 1 Reis 8:49Solomon asks again that God hear from heaven their prayer and plea, and uphold the cause of the people.
  50. 1 Reis 8:50He asks that God forgive all the people’s faults and rebellions, and cause even their captors to have compassion on them.
  51. 1 Reis 8:51The underlying reason for the request: they are God’s people, His inheritance, brought out of Egypt, out of the middle of an iron furnace — an image of intense suffering.
  52. 1 Reis 8:52He asks that God’s eyes stay always open to his pleas and the pleas of the people of Israel, listening whenever they cry out.
  53. 1 Reis 8:53He recalls that God set Israel apart from all the peoples of the earth as His own inheritance, exactly as He had said through Moses when He brought their ancestors out of Egypt.
  54. 1 Reis 8:54After finishing this whole prayer, Solomon, who had been kneeling with his hands stretched out toward heaven, rises from before the altar of the Lord.
  55. 1 Reis 8:55He stands up and blesses the whole assembly of Israel in a loud voice.
  56. 1 Reis 8:56Solomon blesses God for having given Israel rest as He promised — not one word of the good promises made through Moses has failed to come true.
  57. 1 Reis 8:57He prays that God will remain with them as He was with their ancestors, never abandoning them.
  58. 1 Reis 8:58He asks that God incline the people’s hearts toward Himself, so they walk in His ways and keep the commandments given to their ancestors.
  59. 1 Reis 8:59He asks that these words of his plea stay near God always, day and night, so that He upholds the cause of Solomon and of Israel as each day requires.
  60. 1 Reis 8:60The final purpose of all this: that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God, and that there is no other.
  61. 1 Reis 8:61Solomon calls the people to have hearts fully devoted to God, walking in His statutes and keeping His commandments as they are doing that day.
  62. 1 Reis 8:62After the prayer, the king and all Israel offer sacrifices before the Lord — the practical celebration that closes the moment of dedication.
  63. 1 Reis 8:63As in chapter 3, these enormous sacrifice numbers work as royal rhetoric of grandeur, common in ancient Near Eastern temple dedication inscriptions. There is no need to picture the literal, simultaneous slaughter of that many animals.
  64. 1 Reis 8:64That same day the king consecrates the middle of the courtyard, because the bronze altar was too small to hold all the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and fat of the peace offerings that were presented.
  65. 1 Reis 8:65Solomon celebrates the feast with all Israel, a crowd coming from one end of the territory to the other, for fourteen days — seven days and seven more.
  66. 1 Reis 8:66On the eighth day he sends the people away; they bless the king and go home glad and joyful for all the good the Lord had done for David and for Israel.
