Summary

Continuation of the calendar of offerings, now detailing the celebrations of the seventh month: the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the seven days of the Feast of Tabernacles, with a decreasing number of bulls sacrificed each day of the feast.

Explanation

The unusual pattern of the Feast of Tabernacles — beginning with thirteen bulls on the first day and decreasing by one each day until seven on the last — has no direct biblical explanation, but ancient Jewish traditions suggested symbolic interpretations, including the idea that the sacrifices represented intercession for the nations of the world (traditionally counted as seventy), gradually decreasing. This extensive calendar of feasts in the seventh month concentrated the most solemn moments of the Jewish religious year — repentance (Atonement) and celebration of God's provision (Tabernacles) — in rapid succession, creating a period of intense collective spiritual reflection. The application today: having established yearly rhythms of reflection, repentance, and celebration helps communities of faith maintain a consistent spiritual practice over time.

Fun facts

  • The total number of bulls offered over the seven days of the Feast of Tabernacles (13+12+11+10+9+8+7) adds up to exactly 70 — a number that rabbinic tradition symbolically links to the 'seventy nations' listed in Genesis 10, suggesting Israel's intercession on behalf of all the peoples of the earth.
  • The Feast of Trumpets mentioned here (the first day of the seventh month) is the basis for today's Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, still celebrated today with the blowing of the shofar (ram's horn).

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. Numbers 29:1The first day of the seventh month was marked by the blowing of trumpets and a sacred assembly, with no ordinary work allowed. This day later gave rise to the Jewish festival known today as Rosh Hashanah.
  2. Numbers 29:2On the first day of the seventh month, besides the sacred assembly, the specific offering was one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs, all without blemish.
  3. Numbers 29:3Along with these animals came flour mixed with oil, in a larger proportion for the bull and a smaller one for the ram.
  4. Numbers 29:4Each of the seven lambs received its own individual portion of flour.
  5. Numbers 29:5A goat completed the offering, serving to make atonement for the people.
  6. Numbers 29:6This offering for the first day of the seventh month was added both to the regular new-moon offering and to the usual daily sacrifice, since the date happened to fall right at the start of a new month.
  7. Numbers 29:7On the tenth day of the seventh month, the people were to “afflict their souls,” an expression associated with fasting and humility, and do no work at all. This is the day that would later become known as Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the most solemn day of the calendar.
  8. Numbers 29:8On the tenth day of the same month, a day of fasting and humility, the offering was the same as before: one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs without blemish.
  9. Numbers 29:9The flour mixed with oil followed the same proportion as before: more for the bull, less for the ram.
  10. Numbers 29:10Each of the seven lambs again received its own portion of flour.
  11. Numbers 29:11A goat was offered as a sin offering, in addition to the special atonement already made on this specific day and the usual daily sacrifice.
  12. Numbers 29:12Five days later, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, a full seven-day feast began, also marked by a sacred assembly and rest from ordinary work.
  13. Numbers 29:13The first day of this feast brought the largest offering of the entire calendar: thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs, all without blemish.
  14. Numbers 29:14The flour for the thirteen bulls and the two rams followed the same proportion already seen, adjusted to the number of animals.
  15. Numbers 29:15Each of the fourteen lambs received its own individual portion of flour.
  16. Numbers 29:16A goat closed out the first day’s offering, serving as atonement for sin, in addition to the usual daily sacrifice.
  17. Numbers 29:17On the second day of the feast, the number of bulls drops to twelve, keeping the same two rams and fourteen lambs — a pattern that would reduce the bulls by one every following day.
  18. Numbers 29:18The flour offerings and the drink offerings always followed the same proportion, adjusted to the exact number of animals for each day.
  19. Numbers 29:19A goat also completed the second day’s offering, as atonement for sin.
  20. Numbers 29:20On the third day, the number of bulls drops again, now to eleven, keeping the two rams and fourteen lambs.
  21. Numbers 29:21The proportions of flour and drink offering followed the same pattern as the previous days.
  22. Numbers 29:22Another goat was offered as a sin offering on this third day.
  23. Numbers 29:23On the fourth day, the bulls drop to ten, still with two rams and fourteen lambs.
  24. Numbers 29:24The flour offerings and drink offerings continued to be adjusted to the exact number of animals.
  25. Numbers 29:25Each day of the Feast of Tabernacles, the number of bulls decreased by one: thirteen on the first day, now ten on the fourth. In all, the seven days added up to seventy bulls — always with an extra goat for sin.
  26. Numbers 29:26On the fifth day, nine bulls remain, keeping the same two rams and fourteen lambs.
  27. Numbers 29:27Again, the flour and drink offerings followed the usual proportion.
  28. Numbers 29:28On the fifth day of the feast, there are nine bulls — one fewer than the day before, following the decreasing pattern that ran from thirteen down to seven over the course of the week, always with the atonement goat alongside.
  29. Numbers 29:29On the sixth day, the number of bulls drops to eight, with the same two rams and fourteen lambs as always.
  30. Numbers 29:30The proportions of flour and drink offering followed the pattern already established.
  31. Numbers 29:31Sixth day, eight bulls — the count kept dropping by one each day. The next day, the seventh, it would reach seven, closing out the Feast of Tabernacles with a weekly total of seventy bulls.
  32. Numbers 29:32On the seventh and final day of the feast, the number of bulls reaches seven, still with the same two rams and fourteen lambs — adding up all seven days, the total number of bulls offered comes to seventy.
  33. Numbers 29:33The flour and drink offerings on this last day followed the same proportion used throughout the whole week of the feast.
  34. Numbers 29:34A goat closes out the sin offering for this seventh day, in addition to the usual daily sacrifice.
  35. Numbers 29:35On the eighth day, already outside the seven days of the main feast, there was one more solemn assembly, also with rest from ordinary work.
  36. Numbers 29:36The offering for this eighth day goes back to being smaller, the same as on the first day of the month: one bull, one ram, and seven lambs without blemish.
  37. Numbers 29:37The flour and drink offerings for this day followed the standard proportion for this smaller number of animals.
  38. Numbers 29:38A goat also closes out this final special offering, in addition to the usual daily sacrifice.
  39. Numbers 29:39The chapter sums it all up: these were the required offerings for the feasts on the calendar, in addition to personal vows, freewill offerings, and peace offerings that anyone might want to make on their own.
  40. Numbers 29:40Moses passes on this entire calendar of offerings to the people, exactly as the LORD had commanded.
