2And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Verse explanation
God asks Abram to leave the three layers that gave anyone security in the ancient world: country, clan, and “thy father’s house,” which was what guaranteed protection, land, and inheritance for all one’s relatives. Leaving all that behind, without even knowing where he was headed, meant giving up his entire support network.
