Day 49Healing for the Heart

Courage for a New Beginning

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

Psalm 31:24

Starting over is scary. After so much suffering, the part of you that protects itself would rather stay right where it is, even if it hurts — at least the pain you know holds no surprises. But there comes a moment, in recovery, when God invites you to take a step forward. Not a giant leap; just one step. This verse joins two things that seem opposite: "be of good courage" (do your part, take the step) and "he shall strengthen your heart" (God does His part, gives you the strength). You don't begin again by your own courage; you begin again by the courage God places in you the moment you decide to move. Don't wait for the fear to disappear completely — it may not. Go forward with it, holding God's hand. The heart that hopes in the Lord is strengthened right there on the road, not before it. Today, what is the small step of a new beginning set before you? Take it. He will strengthen you as you walk.

Prayer

Lord, give me courage to begin again even when I'm afraid. I take the step; strengthen my heart. I hope in You and trust that You go with me. Amen.
