Day 47Marriage Devotional

Carrying Together

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

Marriage wasn't designed for one person to carry everything while the other watches. Paul speaks of carrying burdens — and in marriage that's literal. Worries about the kids, the anxieties of work, the insecurities you don't tell anyone else about. When your spouse is carrying a weight, do you feel it? When you're carrying one, does he notice? There's a closeness that's built when both of you learn to notice each other. It's not about keeping score of who does more or carries more. It's the awareness that you're a team — and a team works when each person looks at the other, not just at their own load. Ask him today how he's really doing. And let him ask you the same.

Prayer

Father, may my marriage be marked by the real sharing of burdens. May I notice when my spouse is weighed down, and may he notice the same in me. May we be for each other the relief that only love can give. Amen.
