Day 40 — Marriage Devotional
The Same Heart
“Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.”
1 Peter 3:8-9
You and your spouse are different. Different ways of thinking, feeling, reacting. And sometimes those differences turn into trenches. But Peter speaks of something beautiful: being of one mind doesn't mean being identical — it means sharing the same heart toward one another. Compassion, mercy, humility. These aren't romantic words in the movie sense. They're combat words — words from the daily battle of choosing the other person even when it's hard. Being compassionate toward your spouse means trying to understand what he's going through before you judge him. Being merciful means not using his mistakes as a weapon. Being humble means recognizing that you fail too. When these three ingredients enter a marriage, something changes. And God honors that.
Prayer
Lord, let me have the same heart You have toward me — full of compassion and mercy — when I look at my spouse in difficult moments. May humility govern our conversations. Amen.
