Day 2Marriage Devotional

Leave and Cleave

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Genesis 2:24

That word "leave" runs deeper than it sounds. It's not just about an address — it's about loyalty, about priority, about where your heart lives. When you got married, something inside you needed to be reordered. It's not abandoning your family; it's establishing a new center.

Sometimes that process takes years. We carry the habits of our parents' home, the old voices, the patterns learned since childhood — and all of that comes into the marriage with us. God's invitation is to build something new, something unique between the two of you. A language of your own, a way of working things out, a way of loving that belongs only to this home. This "becoming one flesh" doesn't happen at the ceremony — it happens in the small days, in the choices to prefer him, to protect what belongs to the two of you. It's a verb you conjugate every day.

Prayer

Lord, help me leave what needs to be left and unite what needs to be united. May our home truly be ours, built on You. Amen.
