Day 8Peace in Place of Anxiety

The Storm Doesn't Mean You've Been Abandoned

Master, carest thou not that we perish? ... And he arose, and rebuked the wind.

Mark 4:38-39

The disciples were in the middle of the sea, the boat filling with water, and Jesus was asleep. Do you know that feeling? You in the middle of the storm, panic rising, and heaven seeming silent. "Lord, don't You care that I'm sinking?" Notice two things in this story. First: Jesus was in the boat the whole time. He hadn't left; He was right there, closer than the panic let them see. His silence wasn't absence. Second: when the disciples called out to Him, He didn't rebuke them for being afraid — He rebuked the storm. Your distress doesn't annoy God. He isn't angry that you're shaken. The storm you're going through today isn't proof that God abandoned you; often it's right in the middle of it that you discover He was in the boat all along. Call out to Him. He hears, and the same voice that calmed the sea knows the way to your heart.

Prayer

Lord, in the middle of my storm, remind me that You are in the boat with me. Calm what rages within me and bring Your peace. Amen.
