Day 6Peace in Place of Anxiety

You Are Not the Anxiety You Feel

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God.

Psalm 42:5

Watch out for a subtle trap: confusing what you feel with who you are. Anxiety loves to say "you're an anxious person, weak, faithless" — as if that were your identity, a permanent stamp. But look at how the psalmist speaks to himself: he doesn't say "I am cast down"; he talks to his own soul, from the outside, like someone giving advice to a friend. "Why art thou cast down? Hope thou in God." There's a healthy distance there. You have anxiety, but you are not anxiety. You are a son or daughter of God who, at this moment, is passing through a storm — and storms pass. The feeling is real, but it is not the final truth about you. Today, when that voice says "you'll never get better," answer like the psalmist: speak to your own soul. Remind it who is in charge. Say, even before you feel it: "Hope in God. This does not define me. I belong to Him."

Prayer

Father, help me not to mistake myself for what I feel. I am not my anxiety — I am Your child. My soul waits on You. Amen.
