Day 58Peace in Place of Anxiety

Peace Like a River

O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river.

Isaiah 48:18

What an image Scripture chooses for the peace God wants to give you: 'thy peace... as a river.' Think of a river. It's not a stagnant puddle that dries up at the first heat; it's a constant current, flowing from a source and never ceasing. The peace God offers isn't an isolated moment of calm between one crisis and the next — it's a continuous flow, fed by a source that never runs dry: God himself. Notice the hidden invitation in the verse: this river-peace is tied to 'hearkening' to God, to walking close to him, to staying connected to the Source. A river only flows while it's linked to its spring; cut off that link, and it dries up. Your peace works the same way — not by stockpiling calm for later, but by remaining, day after day, connected to God, who is the spring. After so many days on this journey, here is the invitation: make your life with God something continuous, and peace will flow continuously too. Today, stay connected to the Source. Don't look for a sip of peace now and then; seek the river, which never dries up.

Prayer

Lord, I don't want a peace that dries up. Keep me connected to You, the Source, so that Your peace may run through me like a river, every day of my life. Amen.
