Day 54Young Woman of Faith

The Pressure of Others

Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:

Exodus 23:2

The majority isn't always right. And that's hard to hold onto when you're surrounded by them. When everyone is doing something, it feels crazy to be the only one who isn't. When everyone is going along, staying behind feels like making a fuss over nothing.

But the Bible is full of stories of people who resisted the majority — and it was exactly that resistance that made the difference. Noah. Joseph. Daniel. Esther. They weren't different out of vanity — they were different because they knew to whom they belonged.

The pressure of others is real. It comes in the form of comments, of silence, of looks, of exclusion. And no one wants to feel left out. But there's a difference between belonging to a group and belonging to God. The second doesn't cancel out the first — but it does define its limits.

When you feel the pressure, ask yourself: does what they're asking me to do line up with who God says I am? If the answer is no, you have permission to say no — with kindness, without judgment, but with firmness.

Prayer

Lord, may I be brave enough to swim against the current when I need to. May the pressure of others never be greater than Your voice within me. Amen.
