Day 79 — Closer to God — 365 Days
Worrying Too Much About What You Can't Control
“Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?”
Matthew 6:27
Jesus used a simple image that reveals a deep truth: worry doesn't change anything. You can worry for hours about your height and not grow a single inch. You can worry about the weather and it won't change.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't plan or take care of your responsibilities. It means that worry as a mental state — that rumination that just spins in circles with no possible action — is useless and exhausting.
Some things are in your hands: praying, acting on what depends on you, trusting Him with the rest. And some things aren't: what people think of you, the outcome of treatments, the behavior of your grown children, the future of the country.
Today, mentally separate the two lists. What's in my hands? Do it. What isn't? Hand it over. And stop going back to what you've already handed over.
Prayer
Father, help me recognize what I can do and what only You can do. Free me from useless worry that wears me out without accomplishing anything. I want to trust with wisdom. Amen.
