Day 313Closer to God — 365 Days

When the Soul Is Downcast

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Psalm 42:11

Have you ever caught yourself talking to your own soul? Trying to convince yourself that you're fine when you're not?

The psalmist did that. He didn't pretend everything was fine — he acknowledged the downcast feeling, the inner turmoil. But he didn't stop there. He turned inward and said: wait. I will still praise Him. This is going to change.

Sometimes faith isn't a feeling. It's a decision you make while your feelings go the opposite direction. It's telling your own soul: I know you're heavy right now. But God is still my health, still my God — and that doesn't change.

That honesty with God is precious. You don't have to walk into prayer with your soul all tidied up and a smile in place. You can come exactly as you are — downcast, confused, weary — and say: even so, I choose hope.

That choice, repeated every day, slowly changes you from the inside out.

Prayer

Father, my soul is weary. I won't pretend otherwise. But I choose to wait on You. Be the health of my countenance today, as You promised. Amen.
