In Everything, Give Thanks

"In every thing" is too big an expression to ignore. It's not "in the good things" — it's in everything. On the day that went well and the day that fell apart. In the blessing and in the waiting. In the joy and in the longing. Paul wasn't being naive when he wrote this — he himself went through prisons, shipwreck, persecution. He knew that giving thanks in everything doesn't mean pretending everything is fine. It means finding God in everything. It means saying: "Lord, I don't understand this situation, but you are in it — and for that I give thanks." Gratitude doesn't deny the pain.
