Day 281Closer to God — 365 Days

In Everything, Give Thanks

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

"In every thing" is too big an expression to ignore. It's not "in the good things" — it's in everything. On the day that went well and the day that fell apart. In the blessing and in the waiting. In the joy and in the longing. Paul wasn't being naive when he wrote this — he himself went through prisons, shipwreck, persecution. He knew that giving thanks in everything doesn't mean pretending everything is fine. It means finding God in everything. It means saying: "Lord, I don't understand this situation, but you are in it — and for that I give thanks." Gratitude doesn't deny the pain. It places the pain inside a bigger perspective: that God is in control and works all things together for our good. Try it today: give thanks for something difficult. Not because it's easy, but because God is in there too.

Prayer

Lord, teach me a gratitude that goes beyond circumstances. May I find You in everything — in the good and in the hard — and may my heart learn to give thanks always. Amen.
