Day 144Closer to God — 365 Days

Grace for the Humble

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

James 4:6

Grace is not something we earn — but there is a posture of the heart that opens us to receive it. And James points to humility.

Not the humility of putting yourself down, of belittling yourself, of not believing in yourself. But the humility of recognizing that you need God. That you can't manage on your own. That there are things bigger than you, beyond your control.

Pride — the heart that says "I've got this, I'm enough, I don't need anything" — closes the door to grace. Not because God punishes, but because grace, by definition, is something received. And whoever is convinced they need nothing receives nothing.

But whoever comes with open hands, with a heart that says "I need You" — that person receives. And receives more than they expected.

Today you can position yourself to receive grace simply by being honest: Lord, I need You.

Prayer

God, teach me the humility of one who knows their need for You. May I come with open hands and a heart ready to receive Your grace. Amen.
