Day 138Closer to God — 365 Days

Mercy Every Day

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23

Jeremiah wrote Lamentations in the middle of ruins. Jerusalem had been destroyed. The temple, the people, the dreams — all in ashes. And it's in this setting that he writes: the mercies of the Lord never come to an end.

How could he say that in the middle of so much chaos?

Because he knew the character of God. Even when the circumstances screamed otherwise, he held on to what he knew to be true: God is faithful. And every morning that dawns brings new mercies, even if the day before was hard.

Today you might be standing among ruins — of a relationship, of a plan, of an expectation. And it may seem hard to speak of mercy in that state.

But God's mercy doesn't depend on your circumstances. It renews itself while you're still asleep. It dawns with you.

Prayer

Lord, like Jeremiah, may I find mercy even in my ruins. Thank You for renewing Your grace with every morning that dawns. Amen.
