Day 112Closer to God — 365 Days

Hope Unashamed

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Romans 5:5

Hoping is risky. Because hope can be disappointed. And when hope is disappointed enough times, the heart learns to stop hoping — just to avoid getting hurt again.

But Paul says that hope in Him does not put us to shame. Not because everything always turns out the way we want, but because it's anchored in the love of God — poured out inside you by the Holy Spirit.

This isn't hope earned by merit. It isn't hope that depends on you behaving well. It's hope that comes as a gift, poured out, generous, without measure.

The love of God is inside you right now. In the heart that sometimes feels dry, in the place that seems unable to believe anymore — the love of God has been poured out there.

You can hope again. Not naively, but firmly. With your feet on the ground and your eyes on the faithfulness of the One who has never failed.

His hope doesn't end in shame. It ends with God fulfilling what He promised.

Prayer

Father, where hope has dried up in me, pour out Your love again. Let me trust You enough to hope. Amen.
