The verses around Matthew 5:3.
1And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Verse explanation
“Poor in spirit” does not mean weak-willed or unintelligent — it is an expression for someone who recognizes he lacks sufficient resources of his own and depends on God, in contrast with someone who considers himself self-sufficient. It is the first of a series of statements that define happiness in a way quite different from what the culture of the time usually counted as success.
