You Are Not Alone in This

Loneliness is one of the cruelest parts of pain. Even surrounded by people, you can feel deeply alone — as if no one truly knows what is going on inside you, and maybe no one does. But there is a companionship that doesn't abandon you when everyone else goes to sleep, when the visits end, when the phone goes quiet. God promised, with a double negative that leaves no doubt: I will never leave you, nor forsake you. He doesn't promise to be with you only on the good days. The promise holds for the sleepless night, the lonely Sunday, the hour when no one calls. You may feel forgotten by the world, but you are not forgotten by heaven. Where human presence fails, God's presence remains. You have never been, and never will be, truly alone.
