Day 24Marriage Devotional

Loving because He loved first

We love him, because he first loved us.

1 John 4:19

The root of love in marriage isn't the other person — it's God. You love because you were loved first. When that source runs dry — when you are empty, hurt, exhausted — your spouse's love cannot fill what only God can fill.

This is one of the most common traps in marriage: expecting your spouse to fill what only God can fill. When he disappoints you — and he will, because he's human — you hand him a bill that was never his to pay. The secret to loving well in marriage begins with being well loved by God. With spending time receiving His love — in prayer, in the Word, in silence. When you are full of God, there's love left over to give. Not because you are strong — because you are connected to the source. Today, before you expect love, receive it from God.

Prayer

God, let me first receive Your love, so that I can love from a place that will never run out. May I not expect him to be what only You can be. Amen.
