Day 50 — Peace in Place of Anxiety
In Vain You Rise Early
“It is vain for you to rise up early... for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”
Psalm 127:2
This verse seems written just for you. It describes the anxious life exactly: rising early, lying down late, eating the bread of sorrows — in other words, working too much, worrying too much, wearing yourself out trying to secure everything by your own strength. And God's verdict is direct: this is 'vain.' Not because work is wrong, but because the anxiety that comes with it adds nothing — you exhaust yourself without changing the outcome. And then comes one of the tenderest lines in Scripture: 'so he giveth his beloved sleep.' Sleep here is a picture of rest, of provision that comes without that anguished struggle. God cares for his beloved while they sleep; what you try to seize by force, he gives as a gift to those who trust him. You are beloved by him. You don't have to work yourself to exhaustion with worry to earn God's care. Today, hear this invitation: stop trying to hold up the world before dawn. God gives sleep — rest — to those he loves. And you are among his beloved.
Prayer
Father, I wear myself out trying to secure everything by my own strength, and it is in vain. You care for Your beloved while they rest. Give me Your sleep, Your peace. Amen.
