Day 47Peace in Place of Anxiety

Lie Down and Sleep in Peace

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:8

For many anxious people, night is the hardest hour. The day distracts you; but when the light goes out and the house goes quiet, the mind switches on. The worries you pushed away all day arrive all at once at bedtime, and sleep slips away. If that's you, this verse is an embrace. David didn't sleep in peace because the dangers were gone — he had real enemies lying in wait. He slept in peace because of Who was guarding him: "for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety." Your safety for the night doesn't come from having everything resolved before you lie down; it comes from knowing Who stays awake for you. While you sleep, God does not sleep. He watches over your home, your tomorrow, the people you love, everything your staying awake could never actually protect anyway. Letting go to sleep is an act of trust: it's saying, "I can't hold onto this all night, but You can." Today, as you lie down, hand the day and tomorrow into His hands. Close your eyes knowing that Someone greater is standing guard.

Prayer

Lord, I lie down and give into Your hands what I cannot resolve. Guard my home and those I love while I sleep. In You, I rest in safety. Amen.
