Day 28 — Peace in Place of Anxiety
The Still Small Voice After the Wind
“The LORD was not in the wind... nor in the earthquake... and after the fire a still small voice.”
1 Kings 19:11-12
Elijah, exhausted and afraid, expected to find God in the spectacle: in the wind that split the mountains, in the earthquake, in the fire. But God wasn't in any of them. God came afterward, in a still small voice — a whisper, a gentle breeze. What a lesson for an anxious heart. Anxiety is loud: it shouts, it alarms, it makes everything feel urgent and catastrophic. And you, in the middle of the noise, think God needs to come with the same intensity to make himself known. But most of the time, he doesn't compete in volume with your fear. He waits for the commotion to pass and arrives in the silence, gently, in a peaceful thought, in a quiet word that soothes. That's why seeking stillness matters so much: not because God isn't present in the chaos, but because his voice tends to be gentle, and in the middle of the uproar you might not hear it. Today, turn down the noise. Unplug a little from whatever is stirring you up. And stay quiet long enough to hear God's whisper, saying softly: "I am here. Be still."
Prayer
Lord, in the middle of the noise of my anxiety, help me grow quiet enough to hear Your gentle voice. Speak softly to my heart and bring Your peace. Amen.
