Day 23A Man After God's Own Heart

Iron Sharpens Iron

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

Proverbs 27.17

This proverb uses a strong, simple image: just as iron sharpens iron, a man sharpens the face of his friend. Real male friendship isn't just company for watching a game or grabbing a beer — it's mutual influence that makes each man better. A true friend challenges you, corrects you when needed, points out your blind spots, celebrates your wins without envy, and stands by you in your falls without easy judgment. Many men live emotionally isolated — they have acquaintances, coworkers, people for small talk, but no one who truly knows what's going on underneath. That's dangerous: without someone to sharpen your face, you go blind to your own mistakes and alone in your own struggles. Building friendships like this takes vulnerability — opening up about what you normally hide, admitting you're not okay, asking for advice instead of pretending you've got it all under control. It also takes investment: calling first, setting up the meetup, actually asking how the other guy is doing, not just talking work and football. Today, think of who's been iron in your life — and be iron for someone too. No man was made to walk this journey alone.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the friends You've placed in my life. Teach me to be a true friend, who sharpens and is sharpened. Take away my isolation and give me courage to be vulnerable. Amen.
