Day 50Goodnight, Lord

Gratitude even on hard days

Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

"In every thing give thanks" doesn't mean being thankful for everything, but being thankful within everything — even on a hard day. Maybe today felt heavy, and gratitude seems like a strange thing to reach for. But even on a bad day there was a thread of care running through it: you didn't walk through it alone, God was there, and night has finally come to give you rest. Gratitude on hard days doesn't deny the pain; it opens a window of light in the middle of it. Those who learn to give thanks even when it's difficult sleep with a less bitter heart. Tonight, before you close your eyes, look for one reason for thanks even in what weighed you down. You'll find one — there always is. And sleep knowing that, good or hard, this day had God in it from beginning to end.

Prayer

Father, even on this hard day, I choose to give thanks. Thank You for being with me in what weighed me down. Calm my heart and grant me peaceful rest. Amen.
