Day 268 — Closer to God — 365 Days
The Mercy You Need to Give
“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.”
Matthew 5:7
Jesus says the merciful will obtain mercy. He's not talking about a transaction — giving in order to get something back. He's revealing a deeper spiritual truth: the heart that closes itself off from mercy also closes itself off from receiving it.
When we live with our hearts closed toward other people's mistakes — judging, condemning, refusing to give a second chance — we grow hardened. And a hardened heart also struggles to receive what God wants to give.
Mercy is a two-way street not because of math, but because of character formation. Whoever learns to be merciful becomes someone capable of living by mercy.
And you need mercy. Every day. From God, for your own mistakes. Sometimes from the people around you, who see you on your worst days.
So who are you keeping at arm's length from mercy today? Who is waiting for a second chance you haven't given yet?
Opening your hand to give is, more often than not, opening your heart to receive.
Prayer
Father, let me be merciful because I know how much I need mercy myself. Open my heart to give what I continually receive from You. Amen.
