Day 261Closer to God — 365 Days

The Debt Already Paid

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Ephesians 4:32

Imagine someone owes you a huge amount. You wait, you keep track, you think about that debt every day. And then you find out: it's already been paid. Someone stepped in and settled it all, without telling you. The debt no longer exists.

That's more or less what happened to you at the cross. Everything you owed — every mistake, every failure, every moment you turned your back on God — was paid in full by Christ.

Paul uses exactly this image as motivation to forgive: "even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." You've already received forgiveness you didn't earn. Now you can give what you received.

This doesn't take away the pain of what was done to you. But it changes the perspective. You're not being asked to give what you don't have — you're being invited to pass on what you've already received in abundance.

Mercy that was given can flow onward. Kindness that was poured out on you can be poured out through you.

The debt has been paid. You're free to be generous.

Prayer

Lord, when anger takes hold of me, remind me how much You have already forgiven me. Let that reminder set me free to forgive in return. Amen.
