Day 253Closer to God — 365 Days

The Friend Who Stays

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 17:17

The second part of this verse is powerful: "a brother is born for adversity." It's in crisis that you discover who is truly on your side. It's in the hard hour that real friendship reveals itself — or shows itself to be an illusion.

Have you ever gone through this? A difficult situation that pushed away people you thought would stay — and drew close someone you never expected?

Proverbs describes the friend who loves "at all times." Not only in the good times. Not only when it's convenient. Not only when you're on top. At all times.

That kind of friendship is rare. And it's a gift from God when it shows up. But it's also a call to you: have you been that friend? The one who stays when things get hard? The one who shows up without being asked?

Love for one's neighbor often begins in simple things: sending a message to someone who's struggling, showing up without waiting to be called, staying when it would be easier to leave.

Today, who is in anguish near you? This is your moment to be a sister.

Prayer

Lord, may I be the friend who stays. May my love not disappear in hard times. Give me courage to show up when it would be easier to walk away. Amen.
