Day 249Closer to God — 365 Days

Love That Doesn't Give Up

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

1 Corinthians 13:4

Paul begins describing love with two words we sometimes underestimate: suffereth long, and is kind. "Suffereth long" isn't weakness — it's patience. It means love holds on. Not because it ignores what's happening, but because it chooses to stay.

"Kind" means gentle, soft, acting well even when it could act otherwise. It's the love that doesn't take advantage of someone else's weak moment to wound them. That doesn't stockpile ammunition to use later.

The love described here isn't the love of the movies. It's the love that shows up in everyday life, in hard conversations, in choosing not to answer with sarcasm, in refusing to hide resentment behind a smile.

This love isn't natural. It's born of the Spirit. It grows when we ask for it, when we practice it, when we fail and try again.

Which part of this verse challenges you most today? Patience? Kindness? Humility? Bring that part to the Lord and ask Him to work there. He specializes in cultivating what we can't grow on our own.

Prayer

Lord, fill my love with what only comes from You. Let me be patient where I'm impatient, kind where I'm hard. Transform me from the inside out. Amen.
