Day 134 — Closer to God — 365 Days
Because He Loved First
“We love him, because he first loved us.”
1 John 4:19
This small sentence changes a great deal. Because it reverses the order we usually imagine: that we must first love, obey, commit — and only then does God respond.
But John says the opposite: He loved first. Our love for God is not the cause — it is the response. It is the fruit of having been loved before we ever did anything.
It's like a child who loves her parents because they loved her long before she could do anything for them. Her love is a response to the love she already received.
When you find it hard to love God — to pray, to trust, to follow — maybe the answer isn't to try harder. Maybe it's to stop and remember: He loved first. Go back to the source. Let His love reach you again.
Love is not born from effort. It is born from being loved.
Prayer
Father, when I feel distant or cold, help me return to the beginning: You loved first. May that love kindle mine again. Amen.
