Amós 3

BLIVRE · Chapter 3/9

11Portanto o Senhor DEUS diz assim: Um inimigo!

13Ouvi e testemunhai contra a casa de Jacó, diz o SENHOR Deus dos exércitos;

Summary

God explains why He chose Israel to be held so strictly accountable: precisely because they are the covenant people, they will face greater reckoning. Amos illustrates this with a series of natural causes and effects.

Explanation

The opening line, 'You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities,' establishes an important biblical principle: greater privilege and knowledge bring greater responsibility, not immunity. The rhetorical questions about a roaring lion, a bird caught in a snare, and a trumpet sounding in the city follow a single logic: just as every effect has a visible cause, the judgment coming on Israel also has a cause — the people's own sin. Amos also defends his prophetic authority: just as a lion roars instinctively, the prophet cannot help but speak when God has spoken. The application for today: the more we know of God's will, the greater our responsibility to live it out.

Fun facts

  • 'Beds of ivory' and 'winter and summer houses' (mentioned in this chapter and the next) are confirmed by archaeological finds in Samaria: decorative ivory inlays were excavated at the site of the ancient royal palace, evidence of the excessive luxury Amos criticized.
  • The idea of God revealing 'his secret unto his servants the prophets' (v. 7) became a central theological principle about the role of biblical prophecy: the prophets do not invent messages, but pass on what God has already chosen to reveal.

Verse-by-verse explanation

  1. Amós 3:1Opens a new speech addressed specifically to Israel, recalling the history of the Exodus as the basis of the relationship between the two.
  2. Amós 3:2“You only have I known of all the families of the earth” speaks of Israel’s special election, but the prophet uses it the opposite way one would expect: being chosen does not exempt from punishment, it makes the reckoning more serious.
  3. Amós 3:3The first of a series of rhetorical questions with obvious cause and effect, laying the ground for the claim that the coming judgment has a definite cause.
  4. Amós 3:4Another obvious question: a lion only roars once it has already caught its prey — meaning every event has a cause behind it.
  5. Amós 3:5The series continues: a bird only falls into a trap if the trap actually exists — reinforcing that nothing happens without a reason.
  6. Amós 3:6Conclusion of the series of questions: if the alarm sounds, the people tremble; and if disaster strikes the city, it is because the Lord is behind it.
  7. Amós 3:7The idea that God “will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” is the defense of prophetic authority: before any judgment happens, God gives warning through whomever he sends.
  8. Amós 3:8Just as the lion’s roar causes automatic fear, the word of God compels the prophet to speak — this is how Amos defends his own mission.
  9. Amós 3:9Summons even foreign nations, Ashdod and Egypt, to come witness the chaos and oppression inside Samaria — the corruption becomes a spectacle for outsiders.
  10. Amós 3:10Israel has completely lost the ability to act with justice, piling up wealth gained through violence.
  11. Amós 3:11Announcement of a military siege, Assyria drawing near, which will tear down the strongholds and plunder the palaces built with unjust wealth.
  12. Amós 3:12A shepherd who rescues only two legs or a piece of an ear from the lion’s mouth does not save the sheep, he only proves it existed; it is an image of minimal survivors, almost nothing left after Samaria’s destruction.
  13. Amós 3:13A new call to attention, formally addressed to the “house of Jacob” (Israel), introduced by the solemn title “God of hosts.”
  14. Amós 3:14The judgment will strike directly at the kingdom’s main center of idolatrous worship, Bethel, destroying even the “horns” of the altar, which served as a place of refuge.
  15. Amós 3:15“Winter houses” and “summer houses,” along with “houses of ivory,” describe the luxury of Samaria’s rich, who had more than one residence decorated with imported ivory — a symbol of the inequality Amos condemns.
