Read it in context
The verses around Proverbs 4:23.
21Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
22For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
24Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
25Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Verse explanation
In ancient Hebrew thinking, the heart is not the organ of romantic feeling, it is the center of decisions and will — closer to what we today would call the mind or character. Guarding the heart means watching where your choices come from, because from it come the directions a person’s life takes.
From the Proverbs 4 study in Bible in Stories.
