The verses around Proverbs 31:10.
8Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
9Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
10Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
Verse explanation
‘Aleph’ is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet — the entire poem about the virtuous woman is an acrostic: each verse begins with the next letter of the alphabet, all 22 of them, a device used both to aid memorization and to suggest completeness, virtue from beginning to end. Since the Hebrew letters carry no meaning on their own, they are kept here simply as a heading for each verse.
