31And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
Verse explanation
The lamb was the animal used in temple sacrifices, including the Passover lamb, killed to commemorate the people’s exodus from Egypt. Calling Jesus this right at the start of the Gospel compares His coming death to that sin-removing sacrifice, an image any Jew of the time would recognize at once.
