Read it in context
The verses around Genesis 1:1.
1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
Verse explanation
This is the very first sentence in the whole Bible: before telling any story, the text already states that it was God who brought the heavens and the earth into being. It does not explain how — it simply establishes that He existed before everything else.
