Verse explanation
“Given by inspiration of God” translates an expression that suggests something like “God-breathed” — the idea that the sacred text has its origin in God, even though written by human hands. When Paul speaks of “scripture” here, he refers mainly to what we now call the Old Testament, since the New Testament writings were still being written or gathered at this time.
