The verses around 2 Timothy 2:15.
13If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
14Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
17And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymeneus and Philetus;
Verse explanation
The original expression suggests the image of cutting a straight path, like someone cutting a piece of cloth or drawing a line without veering off. Paul asks Timothy to interpret and teach the Scriptures with care and precision, without twisting the meaning to fit some other idea.
