9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
10Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Verse explanation
Calling readers “a royal priesthood” joins two Old Testament ideas: kingship, normally tied to the line of David, and priesthood, tied to the tribe of Levi, roles that had previously been separate. The letter assigns both functions to the Christian community as a whole, without establishing here any specific structure of offices.
