2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Verse explanation
Opens the chapter in astonishment at the love of God: being called “the sons of God” is such a great privilege that the world itself, not knowing God, also fails to recognize that identity in Christians.
