Day 31Marriage Devotional

Listening Is an Act of Love

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.

James 1:19

How many times have you started answering before he even finished the sentence? It happens to all of us. The mind is already building its defense, already planning what to say — and suddenly the conversation has become a duel. Truly listening is an act that demands discipline, but above all it's an act of love. When you silence the urge to respond and choose to really listen to your spouse, you're telling him: "You matter. What you feel matters." You don't have to agree with everything to listen well. You don't have to give up your own opinions. You just need to give him the sacred space of feeling heard. God gave us two ears and one mouth — maybe that proportion is intentional. Ask Him to help you listen with patience, with attention, and with an open heart. That small gesture can change the tone of an entire marriage.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to listen before I speak. When impatience presses in, quiet my heart and open my ears to my spouse. May I be a safe harbor for him, where he can speak without fear. Amen.
